How to Fix a Leaky Faucet: A step-by-step guide with clear instructions.

A dripping faucet wastes water and raises bills. Luckily, most homeowners can fix it with basic tools. This guide will help you stop the drip.

Tools and Materials:

  • Adjustable wrench 

  • Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers 

  • Plumber's grease 

  • New washers or O-rings 

  • Pliers Bucket or towel

Step 1: Turn Off the Water

  • Find the shut-off valves under the sink. Turn them right to close. 

  • If there are none, shut off your home's main water. 

  • Open the faucet to drain the pipes

Step 2: Remove the Handle

  • Pry off the cap on the handle with a flathead screwdriver, if needed.

  • Unscrew the handle screw with a Phillips screwdriver. 

  • Then, remove the handle.

Step 3: Remove the Nut and Stem

  • Loosen the packing nut with an adjustable wrench and remove it.

  • Next, pull out the faucet stem. 

  • Check the stem for damage.

Step 4: Replace the Washer or O-Ring

  • Find the rubber washer or O-ring at the stem's bottom. 

  • If it’s worn, remove it with pliers or a screwdriver. 

  • Add plumber’s grease to the new washer or O-ring.

  • Then, put it on tight.

Step 5: Put the Faucet Back Together

  • Put the stem back in the faucet. 

  • Tighten the packing nut, but not too much. 

  • Reattach the handle and screw. Snap the cap back on.

Step 6: Turn the Water Back On

  • Turn the water on slowly. 

  • Open the faucet and check for leaks. 

  • If it still drips, check that all parts are tight and washers are right.

More Tips

  • For cartridge faucets, replace the whole cartridge if it leaks.

  • For compression faucets, use the right size washer. 

  • Clean buildup with vinegar to help the faucet work better.

These steps can help you fix a leaky faucet. You'll save water and money. If the leak does not stop, call a plumber.
